2010 Project Goal - More conversions from polluting diesel engines to cleaner burning recycled waste vegetable oil. Latin America may be home to more diesel run buses than any other place in the world. These things are everywhere. In most instances, these buses are poorly maintained and emit thousands of pounds of carbon on a daily basis into the air. The buses are predominantly used for public transportation so we can't change people to use an alternate form of transportation but we can change what these buses use to motor down the road on. Enter waste vegetable oil and Gus the Baja Beach Bus. When Gus is not faithfully motoring good folks through Baja he serves as a teaching tool for the local community. Our 2010 project goal is to have just one bus company convert just one bus to run on eco-friendly bio-desel or recycled waste vegetable oil. Old habits die hard. As a mobile learning tool Gus is showing local transportation companies how they may be able to save money on fuel, help the environment, and recycle for a cleaner community for future generations. Baja Trek Community Tot Program 2010 Project Goal -This year we'd like to reach more families. Every year since 2005 some of the crew at Baja Trek have loaded up an old Volkswagen with holiday presents and blazed out into the rural Baja desert to distribute gifts to many children of deserving families. 2010 needs more Santas. You can see last year's run here. We could also use some toy donations as well.
The coming months will see a re-fit of Gus to include new veg tanks, filtration system, interior seating, as well as the replacement and upgrade in technology of veg engine components. Stay tuned! 2010 Experimental Project Goal - How about a movie, or a documentary on a desolate beach under the stars in Baja? It's a homebrewed movie theater in the middle of nowhere. Kind of like your own portable drive-in. The concept of a mobile movie (mobmov) is a simple one. 1. Find a good spot on the beach, desert or mountains in Baja. 2. Take the cushions and beanbags from Gus the Baja Beach Bus, make the popcorn. 3. Set up and project the movie onto whatever's available i.e. A large rock, wall or the side of Gus 4. Pass the drinks and enjoy. Powered by Gus, mobile movies are great for a relaxed night after a long trek. The concept is called MobMov and you can learn more about it at mobmov.org. ![]() ![]() "All journeys
